Looking back on our journey as our project VAST GREEN goes live

Hooray! VAST GREEN is online! To celebrate this milestone, let’s take a short break and look back at the journey towards VAST GREEN from its initiation until now.

The idea for our VAST GREEN Initiative was born back in fall 2019. Back then – before Corona, when physical meetings were still easily feasible – our VAST FORWARD project management team came together for our annual team workshop. The workshop was held in our Hamburg office and centered around the topic “action planning” for 2020. We discussed, where we dealt with future issues, new service areas, and ideas on developing VAST FORWARD’s offers in a more future-oriented way.

During this one-and-a-half-day workshop, we identified numerous topics that seemed relevant for our future development. One of them being a sustainable way of working, especially in the realm of ecological and social matters.

A sustainable way of living is essential for all of us working at VAST FORWARD, which includes vegetarians, vegans, professional waste separators, green electricity consumers, passionate cyclists, pedestrians, organic market customers, emission avoiders, and resource conservers. So while we were thinking about our future and the future of VAST FORWARD, it was evident for our small organization to start thinking about sustainability action! With that in mind, VAST GREEN was born.

So while we were thinking about our future and the future of VAST FORWARD, it was evident for our small organization to start thinking about sustainability action!

As a result, it brought us to the question of what we can do as a company and as individual employees within the organization to move more consciously in our digital corporate world. It also made apparent, that it is crucial for us to raise awareness on the topic of sustainable working within our corporate environment.

The use of digital technologies and the infrastructure they require, cause a significant proportion of global CO2 emissions, such as when sending or storing data on servers, hence requiring a lot of energy. Furthermore, raw materials have to be mined for every piece of hardware, and every device that we use, which then has to be disposed of at some point of its life cycle. Last but not least, a sustainable company should also be aware of the working conditions under which people produce this hardware, as well as being aware of the negative impacts created by raw material extraction on the workers.

As the first result of our fall workshop, we started our VAST GREEN journey with a small step and created a document on sustainable data transfer, which we also shared with some of our customers along with the call to action, “let’s “go green” together. #vastgreen #greenagency”. As the response was highly positive, it affirmed us to go a few steps further.
