Experience “A Day in the Life” with Maren and Matthias, founders and leadership team of Vast Forward GmbH. Discover what a typical day looks like—from early mornings (hello, time zones!) and workout routines to cherished moments with their team and clients.
Let’s dive in!
Onboard the VAST, the day begins early, often before 6 a.m. These quiet moments before sunrise are dedicated to catching up on the news—not just global headlines but also project updates from overnight (while it was their night, their teams were busy!).
By 6:30 a.m., the day picks up: getting up, brushing teeth, preparing lemon water, and grinding fresh coffee beans. The aroma of freshly ground coffee is usually motivation enough for the next step—a morning workout around 7 a.m. Whether it’s yoga on deck or strength training in the shade, the movement jumpstarts their energy.
Around 7:30 a.m., it’s finally time for the first cup of coffee and diving into the workday. Emails are checked, messages are read, and the day’s priorities are set. At 9 a.m. sharp, the first call with the team or clients kicks off.
The morning is all about focused work. Between daily calls, typically wrapping up by 11 or 12, they use the time to drive projects forward and make key decisions. They also manage tasks unique to their floating office: operating the water maker to fill the freshwater tanks (a standard on an off-grid catamaran) or charging the batteries when cloudy skies limit solar power. More information can be found here: Self-sufficiency – electricity and water with solar energy
Lunch happens at 1 p.m. and is a highlight of the day. Skipping breakfast is standard here, so this is when they enjoy a yogurt with fresh fruit or a tomato salad, often paired with a refreshing swim. A quick break is a must before diving back into work.
At 2 p.m., the mission “Inbox Zero” begins. Emails are tackled, Asana tasks are checked off, and everything important is organized and completed. Both Maren and Matthias appreciate this shared love for structure and keeping things in order.
The afternoon is reserved for more creative work. Until around 3 or 4 p.m., they focus on managing their social media channels: planning posts, responding to comments, and crafting new content that captures their life and work on the VAST (or wherever they happen to be – find more on our Instagram).
By 4 p.m., it’s time to leave the boat. When anchored, they take their dinghy—a small tender—to shore. This time is used for errands, dropping off laundry, and immersing themselves in the local culture. Weather permitting, diving or surfing may also be on the agenda, adding some adventure to the mix.
A typical “all-in” day on the VAST wraps up around 7 p.m. with a sundowner. Whether on deck with a view of the water or onshore with a non-alcoholic beer or cocktail, this time is sacred. It’s a chance to reflect on the day, review completed tasks, and plan for tomorrow—all while enjoying a moment of calm.
Life on the VAST is a blend of efficient work, endless inspiration, and a healthy dose of variety and fun. The freedom to work remotely, paired with clear routines, allows Maren and Matthias to enjoy the best of both worlds.
Living the boat life and mastering work-life blending may come with challenges, but it’s exactly what they love!
